Gone Fishin’ ** (1997, Joe Pesci, Danny Glover, Rosanna Arquette, Lynn Whitfield, Nick Brimble, Carol Kane, Willie Nelson) – Classic Movie Review 7943

Lethal Weapon 2 co-stars Joe Pesci, Danny Glover give broad but genial performances as buddies Joe and Gus, on an ill-fated fishing trip to the Florida Everglades, a free trip they win a contest. Trouble follows them all the way, and if even the fish are laughing, they are laughing at them.

Bristol-born Nick Brimble plays Dekker Massey, America’s idea of the usual bad Brit who pinches their car, in director Christopher Cain’s very daft, little-seen but quite amiable and jolly 1997 slapstick buddy comedy Gone Fishin’.

Glover and Pesci try hard, but they are not really at their best in farcical comedy, though they are welcome presences and still tackle the laughs pretty well.

Also in the cast are Rosanna Arquette, Lynn Whitfield, Carol Kane, Willie Nelson, Gary Grubbs, Edythe Davis, Jenna Bari, Samantha Brown, Jeff DiLucca, Frank Nasson, Raynor Scheine and Robyn Hackett.

Gone Fishin’ is directed by Christopher Cain, runs 94 minutes, is made by Caravan Pictures and Hollywood Pictures, is distributed by Buena Vista, is written by Jill Mazursky [Jill Mazursky Cody] and Jeffrey Abrams [J J Abrams], is shot by Dean Semler, is produced by Jill Mazursky, Julie Bergman Sender and Roger Birnbaum, is scored by Randy Edelman and is designed by Lawrence Miller.

It is another fairly big-budget film of the era – it cost $53,000,000  – that did not do well – it grossed only $19,000,000 in the US.
