Adventure’s End * (1937, John Wayne, Diana Gibson, Montagu Love, Moroni Olsen) – Classic Movie Review 11,773

John Wayne and Diana Gibson in Adventure's End (1937).

John Wayne and Diana Gibson in Adventure’s End (1937).

Director Arthur Lubin’s 1937 black and white film Adventure’s End stars John Wayne as Pacific pearl diver Duke Slade, in this very modest, quite weakly written and slackly handled romantic adventure, in which he runs into trouble when he takes work on a whaling vessel.

That trouble comes in the form of the ship’s captain (Montagu Love), who, on his deathbed makes Wayne promise to get his daughter (Diana Gibson) away from the unworthy and unappetizing first mate (Moroni Olsen) and make an honest woman of her.

Adventure’s End is short at just 60 minutes, but even so not brief enough and Wayne is struggling with a lack of decent lines to speak.

Also in the cast are Maurice Black, Paul White, Cameron Hall, Patrick J Kelly, George Cleveland, Oscar William Sundholm, James T Mack, Britt Wood, Ben Carter, Wally Howe, Jimmie Lucas and Glenn Strange.

Adventure’s End is directed by Arthur Lubin, runs 60 minutes, is made and released by Universal Pictures, is written by Ben Grauman Kohn, Scott Darling and Sidney Sutherland, based on a story by Ben Ames Williams, is shot in black and white by Gus Peterson, is produced by Trem Carr and Paul Malvern, is scored by Charles Previn, and designed by Charles Clague.
