You & I *** (2014, George Taylor, Eric Klotzsch, Michal Grabowski) – Classic Movie Review 12,416

Writer Nils Bökamp’s teasing, amusing 2014 German romantic drama road trip film You & I mounts a quiet summer charm attack. It feels real, honest and true, though it’s laid-back and as light as air, and doesn’t intend to dig deep, just entertain, which it does very nicely, with likeable, ideal performances from the tiny cast.

Apparently straight Berlin young man Jonas (Eric Klotzsch) and his gay English best friend Phillip (George Taylor) find two’s company and three’s a crowd when they pick up a hitchhiker named Boris (Michal Grabowski) on a camper trip through a lovely unspoilt countryside area of the Uckermark for Jonas’s photography exhibition project.

When it’s just the two of them, they mess around like a couple of happy idiotic schoolboys, including a lot of giggling, horseplay and skinny dippy. But when Boris joins them, everything changes.

The wild and willing Phillip and the enigmatic Polish boy Boris are soon getting together, and the quieter, more introspective Jonas finds he’s consumed with jealousy, as Boris proves the catalyst for dramatic change in the relationship between Jonas and Phillip, who haven’t met since they lived together as friends for 11 months in London.

You & I is mostly in German, but there is a lot of English spoken too, as Phillip’s German is a weak spot. It is a good advert for the little known area of the Uckermark and the outdoor country life. Equally, it is a bad advert for picking up hitchhikers, possibly.
