Warlords of Atlantis ** (1978, Doug McClure, Cyd Charisse, Peter Gilmore, Shane Rimmer, Lea Brodie, Michael Gothard) – Classic Movie Review 6724

Director Kevin Connor’s 1978 British junior-league monster movie Warlords of Atlantis (aka Warlords of the Deep) stars the game if unlikely team of Doug McClure, Cyd Charisse and Peter Gilmore.

In the screenplay by Brian Hayles, Professor Aitken (Donald Bisset), his son Charles (Peter Gilmore) and Greg Collinson (Doug McClure) are searching for the lost continent of Atlantis, but are betrayed by the crew of their expedition’s ship, and then an insistent octopus drags the Victorian scientists to Atlantis, whose residents include dinosaurs and Atsil (Cyd Charisse).

It is a cheerful adventure, packed with creaky special effects and wooden performances by a very mixed bag of nice, likeable players, some of whom, perhaps understandably, look like they would prefer to be somewhere else, though, to be fair, some of them are working hard.

Also in the cast are Shane Rimmer as Captain Daniels, Lea Brodie as Delphine, Michael Gothard as Atmir, Hal Galili as Grogan, John Ratzenberger as Fenn, Derry Power, Donald Bisset, Ashley Knight, Robert Brown and Daniel Massey.

Warlords of Atlantis is directed by Kevin Connor, runs 96 minutes, is an EMI Films production, is written by Brian Hayles, shot in Technicolor by Alan Hume, produced by John Dark and Kevin Connor, scored by Mike Vickers and designed by Elliot Scott.
