Two a Penny * (1967, Cliff Richard, Dora Bryan, Avril Angers, Ann Holloway) – Classic Movie Review 10,429

Director James F Collier’s 1967 crusading drama Two a Penny is a well-meaning but simple-minded religious fable that arose through pop star Cliff Richard’s meeting with Billy Graham through Christian evangelism.

Making an improbable job of a serious role, Cliff plays an art student called Jamie Hopkins, saved from a life of cynicism and drug pushing. Christian Crusader Graham makes a guest appearance as himself among the coverage of the 1967 Billy Graham London Crusade rally. Two a Penny does have an interesting taste and flavour of the UK in 1967, however.

Songs: ‘Two a Penny’ (words and music by Cliff Richard, performed by Cliff Richard) ‘Love You Forever, Today’ (words and music by Cliff Richard and James F Collier, performed by Cliff Richard) and ‘Questions’ (words and music by Cliff Richard and James F Collier, performed by Cliff Richard).

The original story and screenplay are by Stella Linden.

Also in the impressive cast are Dora Bryan, Ann Holloway (with an “introducing” credit), Avril Angers, Geoffrey Bayldon, Peter Barkworth, Donald Bisset, Edward Evans, Mona Washbourne, Tina Packer, Earl Cameron, Noel Davis, Nigel Goodwin, Charles Lloyd Pack, Richard Vanstone, Warwick Sims, Rudi Patterson, John Watson, Jo Rowbottom, Daphne Riggs, Barbara Bruce, Doreen Keogh, and Norman Mitchell.

Cliff Richard appears without The Shadows.
