Too Outrageous! *** (1987, Craig Russell, Hollis McLaren) – Classic Movie Review 10,365

When the going gets tough, the tough get gorgeous!… An all-new drag-to-riches story…

Star Craig Russell’s 1987 Canadian comedy drama Too Outrageous! is his ten years’ later sequel to his super 1977 cult hit film Outrageous!, in which this time the Canadian drag queen/ female impersonator Robin Turner (Russell) tries his luck in New York with the help of a pair of agents. With its slightly cheesy script by director Richard Benner, Too Outrageous! is slightly less good than the original but it is still very appealing.

Russell’s drag impersonations of the gay icons are totally great and Hollis McLaren is an asset again as Liza Connors. It is the relationship between Robin and Liza that is the big heart and soul of the movie, whereas the drag impersonations provide all the big warmth and laughter.

It is Russell’s last film, before his death in 1990 of an AIDS-related stroke, aged 41.
