Three Wishes ** (1995, Patrick Swayze, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Joseph Mazzello, Seth Mumy) – Classic Movie Review 10,474

‘If you really believe, magic will find you’.

Director Martha Coolidge’s 1995 Three Wishes is a soft-centred, corny feel-good fantasy movie that stars Patrick Swayze as injured vagrant Jack McCloud being invited to move in with kindly Korean War widow Jane Holman (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) and her young sons Tom (Joseph Mazzello) and Gunny (Seth Mumy) in 1955, after she bumps into him with her car and breaks his leg.

With the screenplay smoothly written by Elizabeth Anderson, this wishy-washy fantasy is likeable enough and well acted by the appealing performers. But Three Wishes needs a shot of power, pace, urgency and realism. It’s so desperately well meaning, it hurts.

The story is by Clifford Green and Ellen Green.

Also in the cast are Michael O’Keefe, David Marshall Grant, Diane Venora, Jay O Sanders, John Diehl, Colleen Camp, and D B Sweeney.

Seth Mumy is the son of actor Bill Mumy.
