The White Storm 2: Drug Lords *** (2019, Andy Lau, Louis Koo, Kiu Wai Miu, Chrissie Chau) – Movie Review

Director Herman Yau’s high-octane 2019 Chinese gangster action thriller The White Storm 2: Drug Lords is robust, dynamic and exciting, with the execution more original and impressive than the story, plotting and characters, perhaps inevitably, as new gangster stories and situations are rare. This one will do though, especially as pepped up with so many shootouts and car chases and smashes. The stunt work and action choreography are incredible, with the final subway train system chase inside the Central MTR station amazing.

Andy Lau and Louis Koo star as warring Hong Kong gangsters, the financial tycoon Yu Shun Tin and the drug-dealing Dizang [Jizo]. Michael Kiu Wai Miu plays the third main character, their nemesis policeman Fung. Shun Tin offers a $100 million bounty on Dizang’s life, putting him in conflict with Shun Tin. All three performances are strong and powerful.

It has connections with but is not actually a sequel to The White Storm (2013). Both star Louis Koo, share drug lord themes and have three central male characters. It certainly goes whizzing long and packs a lot into its 100 minutes, so there is never a dull moment, but it is the action choreography that is the real star of the movie.
