The Unsaid ***½ (2001, Andy Garcia, Vincent Kartheiser, Trevor Blumas) – Classic Movie Review 2280

1

Director Tom McLoughlin’s 2001 Canadian thriller stars Andy Garcia as Michael Hunter, a grief-stricken psychiatrist who is battling the memory of his son’s suicide and living with the departure of his wife Penny (Chelsea Field) and daughter Shelly (Linda Cardellini). But then the past returns to trouble him during a new case of a troubled young man called Thomas ‘Tommy’ Caffey (Vincent Kartheiser) in this well-acted, tense and involving psychological thriller with a strong cast.

‘Tommy’ is on the surface a seemingly-untroubled adolescent but he carries disturbing secrets that compel the psychiatrist to unearth the secrets of his patient’s gruesome past. For Michael, Tommy bears a disturbing resemblance to Kyle.

Garcia and Kartheiser are first rate in this undeservedly little known movie, written by Miguel Tejada-Flores and Scott Williams, and based on a story by Christopher Murphey.

Trevor Blumas plays Kyle, Hunter’s beloved 17 year-old son who committed suicide while he was in therapy for depression. Also in the cast are Sam Bottoms, August Schellenberg, Brendan Fletcher, Peter Hanlon, Dena Lang, Trevor Aikman, David Millbern and Teri Polo.
