The Treasure Seekers ** (1979, Rod Taylor, Stuart Whitman, Elke Sommer, Jeremy Kemp, Keenan Wynn) – Classic Movie Review 11,012

Director Henry Levin’s 1977 The Treasure Seekers stars Rod Taylor, who also wrote the screenplay (based on a story by Walter Brough) for this minor, routine action and romance adventure film about two old college buddies Marian Casey and Stack Baker (Rod Taylor and Stuart Whitman) meeting again after a number of years and pursuing the sunken lost treasure of 17th-century pirate Henry Morgan in Jamaica. This involves them with the double-dealing Reg Landers (Jeremy Kemp), who traps them in an underwater cave.

Rod Taylor and Stuart Whitman are both pretty dull, while Jeremy Kemp and Keenan Wynn (as Meat Cleaver Stewart) overact but liven things up a bit, and it is good to have Elke Sommer aboard as the alluring Ursula. However, director Levin does not manage much energy or excitement, though there is an entertaining action climax.

The Treasure Seekers is also known as Contraband, Jamaican Gold, Forty Million Bucks, and On a Dead Man’s Chest.

Also in the cast are Bob Phillips, Jennie Sherman, Dan Jackson, Patrick Wymore, Keith Foote and Dan Jackson.

The Treasure Seekers is directed by Henry Levin, runs 88 minutes, is made by Halart Productions, is released by MGM, is written by Rod Taylor, is shot by Joe Jackman, is produced by Sam Manners, is scored by Byron Lee and is designed by Richard Montgomery.

Filming location: Jamaica.
