The Texans *** (1938, Joan Bennett, Randolph Scott, May Robson, Walter Brennan, Robert Cummings, Robert Barrat) – Classic Movie Review 10,266

Director James Hogan’s 1938 film The Texans is a faded but impressively big-scale Western with vigorous handling and feisty turns from a reliable cast.

As Texas sorts itself out after the US Civil War, what with new towns and racial bigots proliferating, there is plenty of action as well as a love triangle between Ivy Preston (Joan Bennett), Kirk Jordan (Randolph Scott) and Alan Sanford (Robert Cummings).

The Texans is based on the story North of 36, Emerson Hough’s sequel to The Covered Wagon, and filmed under its original title in 1924, re-using footage from that version.

Also in the cast are May Robson, Walter Brennan, Robert Barrat, Raymond Hatton, Harvey Stephens, Chris-Pin Martin, Clarence Wilson, Harry Woods, Kay Whitehead, Jack Moore, Irving Bacon, Francis Ford, William Roberts and Richard Denning.

The Texans is directed by James Hogan, runs 92 minutes, is made and released by Paramount Pictures, is written by Bertram Millhauser, Paul Sloane and William Wister Haines, based on the story North of 36 by Emerson Hough, is shot in black and white by Theodor Sparkuhl, is produced by Lucien Hubbard, is scored by Gerard Carbonara, with Art Direction by Hans Dreier and John B Goodman.
