The Stupids ** (1996, Tom Arnold, Jessica Lundy, Bug Hall, Alex McKenna) – Classic Movie Review 6648

The title The Stupids gives cause for great fear, but this 1996 movie turns out to be a surprisingly tolerable comic-book comedy, with a genial and funny star turn by Tom Arnold as Stanley Stupid, and agreeable ones from Jessica Lundy as Joan Stupid, Bug Hall as Buster Stupid, and Alex McKenna as Petunia Stupid.

Director John Landis indulges his passion for including fellow film directors in his movies with David Cronenberg as the postal supervisor, Robert Wise as Stanley’s neighbour, Atom Egoyan as the TV studio guard, Costa-Gavras as the petrol-station man, Norman Jewison as the TV director. And Christopher Lee pops in as Evil Sender.

Also in the cast are Mark Metcalf, Matt Keeslar, Scott Kraft, Frankie Faison, Mick Garris and Kevin Conway.

The Stupids is written by Brent Forrester, based on characters created by James Marshall and Harry Allard, shot by Manfred Guthe, produced by Leslie Belzberg, scored by Christopher L Stone and designed by Phil Dagort.

Bug Hall celebrated his 35th birthday on 4 February 2020. He was born as Brandon Hall on February 4, 1985 in Fort Worth, Texas, and known for The Little Rascals (1994), The Stupids (1996) and Baby Driver (2017).
