‘Laugh. Cry. Share the pants.’

Four 17-year-old best girlfriends buy a pair of jeans and agree to share the pants but not wash out the magic, in director Ken Kwapis’s 2005 chick flick tale of female friendship The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

It stars Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera and Blake Lively as teenagers Tibby Rollins, Lena Kaligaris, Carmen Lowell and Bridget Vreeland from Bethesda, Maryland, who have been best friends all their lives but they are about to spend their first summer apart. They decide to share equally over the summer a pair of jeans they find while shopping that fits them all perfectly.

The young actresses have the talent but, with leukaemia, absent fathers and hunky boyfriends, the script is awash with all the soap the jeans never get to see.

The screenplay writers are Delia Ephron and Elizabeth Chandler, with their script based on the 2001 young adult novel by Anne Brashares.

Also in the cast are Bradley Whitford as Carmen’s father Al Lowell, Jenna Boyd as Bailey Graffman, Nancy Travis as Lydia Rodman, Erica Hubbard as Soccer Pal Diana, Kyle Schmid as Paul Rodman, Mike Vogel as Eric Richman, Michael Rady as Kostas Dounas, Kristie Marsden as Soccer Pal Olivia, Emily Tennant as Krista Rodman, Leonardo Nam as Brian McBrian, Rachel Ticotin as Christina, Maria Konstandarou as Yia Yia and George Touliatos as Papou, with Victoria Tennant as Young Tibby, Alanna Dawn Ekkert as Young Lena, Tiara Santana as Young Carmen and Ashley Hale as Young Bridget.

It was partly shot in the Kamloops and Ashcroft area in British Columbia, Canada. Principal photography started on the island of Santorini, Greece, and filming then continued in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

It is followed by The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (2008) and an announced Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3.
