Alexander Korda’s 1934 British romantic comedy drama film The Private Life of Don Juan stars Douglas Fairbanks Sr in his final role as an aging Don Juan, along with Merle Oberon, Binnie Barnes, Joan Gardner, Gina Malo, and Benita Hume.

Producer/ diirector Alexander Korda’s 1934 British romantic comedy drama film The Private Life of Don Juan stars Douglas Fairbanks Sr as an aging Don Juan, who, weary of love, retires by faking his funeral until he has to prove his old prowess after so many horrible works of fiction about him.
It is the final role of the 51-year-old silent film superstar Fairbanks Sr, who died five years later. The screenplay is by Frederick Lonsdale and Lajos Biro based on the 1920 play L’homme à la Rose [The Man with the Rose] by Henri Bataille.
Fairbanks Sr’s last swashbuckler lacks spirit and polish, and the star himself seems rather weary. Producer Korda sends in the pretty ingénues (Merle Oberon, Joan Gardner, Gina Malo) to no avail, but Binnie Barnes (as the pure and simple maid Rosita), Athene Seyler (as the innkeeper Theresa), and Melville Cooper (as Leporello) amuse unfailingly. And Benita Hume entertains as Don Juan’s wife Dona Dolores, who still loves him though they have not lived together for five years.
Merle Oberon plays Antonita, a dancer of passionate temperament, Gina Malo plays Pepita, another dancer of equal temperament, and Joan Gardner plays Carmen, a young lady of romance.

Fairbanks Sr had seen and admired Korda’s 1933 worldwide hit The Private Life of Henry VIII and was trying to emulate it, in terms of style, tone and success, unsuccessfully it turns out.
