Director C M Pennington-Richards’s 1953 British comedy film The Oracle [The Horse’s Mouth] stars Michael Medwin, Robert Beatty, Virginia McKenna, and Mervyn Johns in this easy-going satirical and whimsical comedy that tries hard but manages only a couple of minor giggles.
Michael Medwin plays a holidaying newsman who finds there is an oracle down an Irish well that has the power to foretell all. Medwin is dismissed and disgraced for filing the story, but soon people take notice when the oracle predicts race winners.
The pleasant playing from a jolly cast and the film’s good-hearted nature are the main compensations of this Group 3 production, but it just isn’t very funny.
The cast are Michael Medwin, Robert Beatty, Virginia McKenna, Mervyn Johns, Joseph Tomelty, Gillian Lind, Ursula Howells, Arthur Macrae, Louis Hampton, John Charlesworth, Marie O’Neill, Lockwood West, John McBride, Derek Tonsley, Patrick McAlinney, Lionel Marson, Jean St Claire, Jack May, and Gilbert Harding.
The Oracle [The Horse’s Mouth] is directed by C M Pennington-Richards, runs 85 minutes, is made by Group 3, is released by British Lion, is written by Patrick Campbell, is shot in black and white by Wolfgang Suschitzky, is produced by Colin Lesslie, and is scored by Temple Abady.
It was released in the US as The Horse’s Mouth.
