The 1984 Swedish crime thriller film The Man from Majorca [Mannen Från Mallorca] is based on Leif G W Persson’s novel Grisfesten [The Pig Party], and stars Sven Wollter, Tomas von Brömssen, and Håkan Serner, along with Ernst Günther, Thomas Hellberg, Ingvar Hirdvall, and Niels Jensen.
The Man from Majorca is a satisfying police thriller from Swedish director Bo Widerberg (Elvira Madigan) about a routine post office raid in Stockholm that turns out to be something much bigger involving the special squad and the minister of justice.
The liberal-minded Widerberg, who also wrote the neat script, points the finger at police methods and political corruption, while attending intently to the plot’s set pieces and red herrings. Sven Wollter and Tomas von Brömssen play the investigating policemen Bo Jarnebring and Johan Johansson.
The Man from Majorca shares similarities with Widerberg’s previous thriller film The Man on the Roof (1976).
It was a big success: costing 500 000 Swedish krona, it earned 15 million krona, and was released by Cannon.
