The Little Drummer Girl ** (1984, Diane Keaton, Yorgo Voyagis, Klaus Kinski, Sami Frey, Michael Cristofer, David Suchet) – Classic Movie Review 9278

Director George Roy Hill’s disappointing 1984 thriller The Little Drummer Girl stars Diane Keaton, whose performance as a naive pro-Palestinian American actress called Charlie involved in spying in the Arab-Israel conflict just about saves a lumpen and over-intricate version of the John Le Carré international best-selling novel.

Director Hill gives it a glossy sheen but lets it run much too long at 130 minutes and does not raise nearly enough excitement.

Also in the cast are Yorgo Voyagis, Klaus Kinski, Sami Frey, Michael Cristofer, David Suchet, Eli Danker, Thorley Walters, Anna Massey, Kerstin De Ahna, Robert Pereno and Ben Levine.

The Little Drummer Girl is directed by George Roy Hill, runs 130 minutes, is made by Bavaria Film, Pan Arts and Warner Bros, is released by Warner Bros, is written by Loring Mandel, based on the John Le Carré novel, is shot in Technicolor and black and white by Wolfgang Treu, is produced by Robert L Crawford, is scored by Dave Grusin and is designed by Henry Bumstead.

It is shot in Bavaria Studios, Bavariafilmplatz 7, Geiselgasteig, Grünwald, Bavaria, Germany, and Lee International Studios, Wembley, London, England, as well as on location in Greece, Germany, Israel and Lebanon.

It is an earlier version of The Little Drummer Girl (2018).
