Susana [The Devil and the Flesh] **** (1951, Rosita Quintana, Fernando Soler, Víctor Manuel Mendoza) – Classic Movie Review 9959

Director Luis Buñuel’s splendid 1951 film drama Susana [Susana, demonio y carne] [The Devil and the Flesh] was filmed fast in black and white in Mexico and is the story of Susana (Rosita Quintana), an unstable young woman who escapes from a reformatory and ends up at a plantation, where she disrupts a decent working family’s lives.

Susana is highly charged, has a lusty atmosphere and is full of Buñuel’s unique surrealist touches.

It is written by Luis Buñuel, Jaime Salvador and Rodolfo Usigli, based on the novel by Manuel Reachi.

Susana [Susana, demonio y carne] [The Devil and the Flesh] was shot at Estudios Churubusco Azteca, Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico.

Also in the cast are Fernando Soler, Víctor Manuel Mendoza, María Gentil Arcos, Luis López Somoza, Matilde Palou and Rafael Icardo.

It was released on DVD as a double feature in March 2011 with Luis Buñuel’s The Brute [El Bruto] (1953).
