American gay man Michael (Daniel Bateman) is given a ticket to Venice by his rich mom (Mink Stole) and experiences a love that awakens his spirit, in Sex Love Venice (2024).

Healing from a painful breakup and in therapy, American gay man Michael (Daniel Bateman) is given a ticket to Venice, Italy, by his rich mom (Mink Stole) and experiences a love that awakens his spirit.
American boy Michael (Daniel Bateman) then meets Italian boy Marco (Alessandro Ananasso) on an app on his vacation in Venice. A strange holiday romance ensues. Italian boy wants to take it slow and easy. American boy hasn’t got much time, he needs to get the pace going. The point is, he’s looking for sex and he finds love, fleeting though it might be, transforming though it is.
Writer/ director Steve Balderson’s romantic drama film Sex Love Venice tries hard, seeks to be passionate and meaningful, and interests and entertains, but pushes its luck. This is a hard nut to crack. The story is fairly banal, the dialogue is mostly high-flown, straining for meaning and significance. Nevertheless, it’s all quite enjoyable. Not too much, but enjoyable. It certainly has its moments, good as well as awkward. Venice looks to die for. You can’t really go wrong there, and there’s plenty of it on show. The Italian character is very unusual, and Alessandro Ananasso plays him nicely.
