Seré breve al momento de morir [Dying Briefly] *** (2024, Martín Saracho, Joan Kuri, Mikael Lacko) – Classic Movie Review 13,560

The 2024 Mexican romantic dance drama film Seré breve al momento de morir [Dying Briefly] stars Martín Saracho, Joan Kuri and Mikael Lacko, and dissects the destructive power games of ballet.

Director Juan Briseño’s 2024 Mexican romantic drama film Seré breve al momento de morir [Dying Briefly] stars Martín Saracho, Joan Kuri, Nova Coronel, Mikael Lacko and Alejandra Cárdenas.

Martín Saracho stars as Sebastián, who joins a prestigious contemporary dance company and instantly begins a torrid romance with talented and attractive young dancer Arsenio (Joan Kuri). It’s perfect love at first sight between two damaged individuals who could heal each other.

But then sadistic and plain nasty new choreographer Mikael (Mikael Lacko) arrives on the scene and complicates things with his appalling arrogance. His game plan seems to be to humiliate everybody and have sex with everybody he fancies, which includes Sebastián and Arsenio, sparking a brutal competition to be the principal dancer, and destroying the two dancers’ love, and possibly their lives.

The three men are excellent in this imaginatively and compellingly realised Mexican dance drama, with an exciting dance atmosphere, and an eager mission to dissect the destructive power games of ballet.

Nova Coronel plays Sebastián’s predecessor Luciano, and Alejandra Cárdenas plays Alejandra.

Juan Briseño writes the screenplay with Isaac Basulto and Pamela Martínez. It is Briseño’s second feature film after Corazón de Plata (2023}.

The Centro Nacional de las Artes in Mexico City.

It is shot by Ingmar Montes in Mexico City, including at the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, the nearby Sala Miguel Covarrubias dance theatre, in the grounds of the Bosque de Chapultepec and at the Centro Nacional de las Artes. These are beautiful circumstances as a backdrop for all the suffering in the film.

The score is by Carlo Ayhllón.
