Scanners III: The Takeover * (1991, Liliana Komorowska, Valérie Valois, Steve Parrish, Colin Fox) – Classic Movie Review 9887

Director Christian Duguay’s Canadian 1991 action horror sci-fi film sequel Scanners III: The Takeover is again based on the characters from David Cronenberg’s 1981 movie Scanners.

Duguay returns as director after his earlier 1991 Scanners II: The New Order for this third one in the series that sees a new generation of Scanners planning to take over the planet.

Scanners III: The Takeover is basic, dull horror video-fodder, avoiding David Cronenberg’s original allegorical vision in favour of routine horror violence action.

Steve Parrish stars as Alex Monet, with Liliana Komorowska as Helena Monet, Valérie Valois as Joyce Stone and Colin Fox as Dr Elton Monet.

It is largely a different cast but some actors from Scanners II: The New Order appear, eg Jason Cavalier as a punk leader.

Also in the cast are Daniel Pilon, Michel Perron, Peter Wright, Sith Sekae, Claire Cellucci, Michael Copeman, Chip Chuipka, Jean Frenette and Sylvain Beauchamps.

The writers are B J Nelson, Julie Richard, David Preston and René Malo (the producer).

It was shot in Thailand and Montréal, Québec, Canada, between 24 October 1990 and 21 December 1990 for 5,400,000 Canadian dollars.

After a premiere in October 1991, it was released in Canada on 31 January 1992 and the US on 14 May 1992. The UK video box title is Scanner Force.

It was released by Anchor Bay Entertainment in the UK in 2005 on DVD.

Scanners III: The Takeover is directed by Christian Duguay, runs 101 minutes, is made by Filmtech, Image Organization, Lance Entertainment and Groupe Malofilm, is released by Malofilm Distribution (1991) (Canada) and Image Organization (1991), is written by B J Nelson, Julie Richard, David Preston and René Malo, is shot by Hugues de Haeck, is produced by Pierre David (executive producer), Rénald Paré (executive producer) and René Malo, is scored by Marty Simon and is designed by Michael Joy (Production Design) and Lynn Trout (Art Direction).
