Ooh… You Are Awful [Get Charlie Tully] *** (1972, Dick Emery, Derren Nesbitt, Ronald Fraser) – Classic Movie Review 9763

Dick Emery’s camp, lowbrow television act transfers to the movies amusingly and successfully in Cliff Owen’s 1972 British comedy Ooh… You Are Awful [Get Charlie Tully].

The plot, about a con man Charlie Tully (Emery) who, with the hindrance of his opponent Sid Sabbath (Derren Nesbitt), will gain his £500,000 fortune if he can find a girl who has tattooed on her behind the number of a Swiss bank account, gives him room to display his forte for impersonations and outrageous gags.

Though the film is pretty rude and crude, Emery is amusing in a funny sort of way, director Owen directs some of the set pieces quite imaginatively, while Ronald Fraser, Pat Coombs and William Franklyn add to the fun.

Also in the cast are Brian Oulton, Norman Bird, Cheryl Kennedy, Roland Curran, Liza Goddard, Ambrosine Phillpotts, David Healy, Steve Plytas, Louis Negin, Neil Wilson, Henry Gilbert, Stefan Gryff, Sheila Keith, Phil Brown, and Margaret Courtenay.

The script is by John Warren (original screenplay) and John Singer (original screenplay). The executive producers are Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat.

The Dick Emery Show ran from 1963–1981, was mostly written by John Warren and John Singer, and often featured Pat Coombs. His catchphrase was: ‘Ooh, you are awful… but I like you!’
