One More Train to Rob ** (1971, George Peppard, Diana Muldaur, John Vernon) – Classic Movie Review 9761

The 1971 Western film One More Train to Rob, about the aftermath of an assault on a trainload of gold ending up with the hero being framed and sent to prison, features a star turn by George Peppard as Harker Fleet, a train robber who seeks revenge for a former betrayal and his share of the loot from duplicitous compatriots Timothy Xavier Nolan (John Vernon) and Katy (Diana Muldaur).

Director Andrew V McLaglen continues his fascination with Westerns in this routine but capably done movie from the genre’s dying days, but George Peppard doesn’t give an exciting enough star turn to make it really something. It is competent but it feels a bit of an amiable, easy-going B-movie.

Comic moments and violent action sequences alternately enliven an otherwise overly formulaic and highly familiar revenge plot, and there is a nice cast of old-time Western character stars (John Doucette, George Chandler, Marie Windsor, Joan Shawlee and Harry Carey Jr) to help out.

Also in the cast are France Nuyen, Steve Sandor, Soon-Tek Oh, Richard Loo, C K Yang, Robert Donner, Timothy Scott, Hal Needham, Jim Burk, Ben Cooper, Guy Lee, Ray Dimas, Pamela McMyler, Merlin Olsen, Phil Olsen, Don Barry, Charles Seel, Larry J Blake, Michael F Blake, Jon Drury and John Mitchum.

It is shot in Old Tucson, Tucson, Arizona; Spahn Ranch, Chatsworth, Los Angeles; Malibu Creek State Park – 1925 Las Virgenes Road, Calabasas, California; and Universal Studios,, California.
