Novocaine *** (2001, Steve Martin, Helena Bonham Carter, Laura Dern) – Classic Movie Review 6763

Steve Martin stars as Frank, a shy dentist who is bowled over by the attentions of his sexy patient Susan (Helena Bonham Carter), who proves to be this offbeat comedy crime drama movie’s femme fatale, who seduces Frank. This leads Frank to steals all of the drugs from his practice and he ends up as a murder suspect.

Martin goes for a very effective change of pace in writer-director David Atkins’s satisfyingly clever and enjoyable 2001 darkly comic thriller.

Also in the cast are Chelcie Ross, Elias Koteas, Scott Caan, Polly Noonan and Lynne Thigpen.

Several members of Atkins’s family are dentists and he consulted them on the film. He is also the screenplay and story writer of Arizona Dream (1992).
