Kris Kristofferson plays Stan, an American cop newly arrived on the Comoro Islands in the Indian Ocean to try to find his errant model daughter. But corrupt locals and a typically clichéd nasty Mr Big get in his way – at least till the climactic fight in the title thunderstorm.

Night of the Cyclone is an only moderate, not very well acted and indifferently written thriller, spiced up with some Eighties-style sex and violence and flashy visuals (shot by cinematographer James Robb) on inspired locations. It is enticingly filmed on location on the Comoro Islands, Comoros, with scenes in Los Angeles.

Kristofferson looks unhappy. Patrick Lee’s screenplay is the main problem.

It was shot in 1989.

It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 1990 and made its video premiere on November 15, 1990.

The country of Comoros is made up of three islands in South-Eastern Africa, at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean. Its capital is Moroni, its largest city.

Also in the cast are Winston Ntshona, Dick Reineke, Marcel Van Heerden, Alla Korot, Anthony Fridjon, Toff Jensen, Michael Brunner, David Sherwood, and Kurt Egelhof.
