Military Wives *** (2019, Kristin Scott Thomas, Sharon Horgan, Jason Flemyng, Greg Wise) – Classic Movie Review 12,706

Director Peter Cattaneo’s 2019 feel-good British comedy drama Military Wives is an excellent, crowd-pleasing entertainment, with a strong central idea and a well chosen cast on good form. It stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Sharon Horgan, Jason Flemyng and Greg Wise.

The screenplay by Rosanne Flynn and Rachel Tunnard is inspired by the true story of the Military Wives Choirs, a network of 75 choirs in British military bases featured in the fourth series of the British TV documentary series The Choir.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on 6 September 2019 and was released by Lionsgate in the UK on 6 March 2020. Synopsis With their partners serving in Afghanistan, a group of British women back home form a choir and become a media sensation and global movement.

It’s a bit manipulative and simple, but it is a heart-warmer, and it’s easy to fall for its many charms, not least the brisk, capable, sterling performances of Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan. It’s a little winner, a particularly good showcase for what a sympathetic and appealing Kristin Scott Thomas can do.

The cast are Kristin Scott Thomas as Kate, Sharon Horgan as Lisa, Jason Flemyng as Crooks, Greg Wise as Richard, Emma Lowndes as Annie, Gaby French as Jess, Lara Rossi as Ruby, Amy James-Kelly as Sarah, India Ria Amarteifio as Frankie, Laura Checkley as Ma, Sophie Dix as Beatrice, Beverley Longhurst as Hilary, Jack James Ryan as Private Shaw, Karen Sampford as Choir Member, and Robbie Gee as Red.
