Lady Ice ** (1973, Donald Sutherland, Jennifer O’Neill, Robert Duvall) – Classic Movie Review 10,944

Director Tom Gries’s chilly 1973 crime thriller Lady Ice lets down its top-notch cast in a tale of insurance investigator snoop Andy Hammon (Donald Sutherland) who hunts wealthy young beauty Paula Booth (Jennifer O’Neill), the daughter of gem fence Paul Booth (Patrick Magee), and then teams with her to pinch $3million worth of diamonds from gem robbers.

Sutherland and O’Neill are pleasant company, but Robert Duvall provides easily the classiest performance as Ford Pierce, the cop on the case. Also beefing up the cast are Eric Braeden as Peter Brinker, Jon Cypher as the bad guy Eddie Stell, Buffy Dee, and Perry Lopez.

The acting, Lucien Ballard’s spectacular Miami Technicolor and Panavision photography and some breathtaking car chases are the main pluses, but they should have kept Alan Trustman and Harold Clemens’s misfiring script on ice, or at least found a way to hot it up.

Story: Alan Trustman.

Lady Ice is directed by Tom Gries, runs 93 minutes, is made by Tomorrow Entertainment, is released by National General Pictures (1973) (US) and Fox-Rank (1974) (UK), is written by Alan Trustman and Harold Clemens, based on a story by Alan Trustman, is shot in Technicolor and Panavision by Lucien Ballard, is produced by Harrison Starr and scored by Perry Botkin Jr.
