Director Robert Stevenson’s 1957 Walt Disney Technicolor film Johnny Tremain [Johnny Tremain and the Sons of Liberty] is based on the 1944 novel by Esther Forbes, and stars Hal Stalmaster, Luana Patten, Jeff York, Sebastian Cabot, and Richard Beymer. It tells the story of the years in Boston, Massachusetts, before the outbreak of the American Revolution
Hal Stalmaster plays a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed Boston lad, a silversmith’s apprentice called Johnny Tremain, who gets involved in the beginnings of America’s fight for independence, as he joins the colonial battle against the wicked English.
This well-produced Disney historical adventure drama is a pleasing mix of fact and fiction that rattles along at a vigorous pace.
If you don’t recognise Sebastian Cabot (in his second film role for Disney, as Jonathan Lyte), you’ll perhaps recall his voice from a host of Disney cartoons.
It was first released in cinemas on June 19, 1957, including a UK release, but then it was shown on TV in two episodes on November 21 and December 5, 1958.
Walt Disney’s daughter Sharon Mae Disney has a small uncredited role as Dorcas.
