In the Grayscale [En la Gama de los Grises] (2015, Francisco Celhay, Emilio Edwards, Daniela Ramírez, Sergio Hernández, Matias Torres) – Classic Movie Review 13,889

Francisco Celhay stars as a 35-year-old architect who leaves his perfect life to find himself, in the admirable 2015 Chilean drama film In the Grayscale.

The 2015 Chilean drama film In the Grayscale [En la Gama de los Grises] is directed by Claudio Marcone and written by Rodrigo Antonio Norero.

Francisco Celhay stars as 35-year-old Bruno, a married Chile architect with a perfect life, a nice wife (Daniela Ramírez) and young son, a beautiful house and a thriving architecture office. It might seem like the perfect life, and for somebody else it would be, but Bruno is unhappy and unresolved, and feels he needs to have time to find himself. So he decides to leave his wife to move out to live alone, and is hired by a businessman to build an iconic public monument in Santiago city. As he works to search for heritage traces, working with a 29-year-old gay history teacher/ tour guide named Fer (Emilio Edwards), an unexpected and intense romance starts between them. Fer is agile, energetic, captivating and gay, everything that Bruno is not, but would like to be.

Bruno has hit 35 without exploring his unresolved bisexuality, which has naturally given him a deep sense of unease. Now a bold decision to leave everything about his perfect life behind provides a couple of lucky chances (the approach by the businessman, the energetic, captivating gay history teacher) for him actually to start his life, provided he has further courage to follow his own path of course.

In the Grayscale [En la Gama de los Grises] is a thoughtful, intelligent and smart movie. persuasively written and nicely acted. It has something on its mind and something to say, and it says it coolly and sensibly. It may not sound too exciting, maybe, but the characters are involving and the story is engrossing, exploring culture and history, as well as sexual identity, love and self-discovery. It is a cool and subtle film, cerebral and intellectual rather than emotional or physical, and all the better for it. In the Grayscale ingratiates itself and is haunting. It is poignant and evocative, quite admirable.
