Two guys, an unexpected love and the emptiness that attracts them. Giovanni Carpanzano’s 2023 Italian romantic drama film Il Vuoto [Empty] stars Gianluca Galati and Kevin Di Sole as Giorgio and Marco, guys from two different worlds.

Giorgio is a lawyer’s son, while Marco is the son of a farmer. But both unite in the name of love to fight to emancipate themselves from the outskirts of a southern Italian city.

The film has much striking, interesting work, some attractive aspects, both visual and verbal, and plenty of local colour to offer. But it is oddly elusive and unsatisfying, much like the movie’s love affair actually, which fails to involve fully. The performances are strong enough but perhaps not quite engaging enough, though that might be because there is a large number of rather infuriating, vain, self-obsessed characters. The offbeat Gianluca Galati and Kevin Di Sole are quite appealing though.

Giorgio and Marco come from two different worlds: the former is the son of an accomplished lawyer, while the latter is the son of a farmer. Both guys fight to emancipate themselves from the outskirts of a southern city. They dream of an overwhelming love and, above all, for different reasons, they are burning with the desire to emerge. The force that attracted them, it will force them to fight to be together. The Empty (Il Vuoto) that pushes them towards each other will bring Giorgio and Marco chasing each other, walking on the balance of the emptiness that attracts them.
