The likeable and appealing 2022 Italian comedy-drama film Il Filo Invisibile [The Invisible Thread] stars Francesco Gheghi as Leone, a teenager who is making a school video about his two gay fathers. 

The 2022 Italian comedy-drama film Il Filo Invisibile [The Invisible Thread] stars Francesco Gheghi as Leone, the teenage son of two gay fathers Paolo and Simone (Filippo Timi, Francesco Scianna) who is making a school documentary video about them with his best friend Jacopo (Emanuele Maria Di Stefano), but is knocked sideways when it turns out that Simone is having a long-term affair with another man, Riccardo (Mauro Conte).

While prejudices and misunderstandings are flying about concerning his sexuality, Leone is nervously experiencing his first love story with a schoolmate called Anna (Giulia Maenza), whose gay brother Dario (Matteo Oscar Giuggioli) fancies him.

Just when Paolo and Simone are celebrating their 29th anniversary, Riccardo unexpectedly turns up and so does Tilly (Jodhi May), the American woman who helped his parents to bring Leone into the world.

Il Filo Invisibile [The Invisible Thread] may be slightly contrived and occasionally too farcically comedic, yet it is generally very warm, wise and entertaining. It’s kinda sweet and touching too. There’s not a villain in sight, just a few people who make a few crucial mistakes, and this film forgives them all. It has a lot of love.

It also has a lot of complex characters and complicated situations, so, though sometimes comedic and sometimes sentimental, it has a strong serious challenging motive, especially challenging in its native Italy. Lots of different issues about parenthood are given an intelligent working through.

The performances are good, with Francesco Gheghi an appealing young hero, and Filippo Timi and Francesco Scianna engaging as the gay dads.
