The 2021 American biographical crime drama film House of Gucci is an unbelievably terrible, boring movie. It is a long hard struggle to watch, and undoubtedly Ridley Scott’s worst film. The more he tries to stir it up, and energise it, the worse it gets. With this kind of flash, it just goes down the pan. Does it try to be satirical, sophisticated and campy? If so, it fails miserably.
Based on the 2001 book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed by Sara Gay Forden, the film follows the story of Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) and Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) as their romance transforms into a fight for control of the Italian fashion brand Gucci. Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Jack Huston, Salma Hayek and Al Pacino also star.
Sadly Al Pacino is awful, giving his worst performance since Gigli in 2003. But then so are Adam Driver, Jared Leto and Lady Gaga. Yes the dialogue, acting and dodgy accents are spectacularly bad, but not amusingly so. Yes the sight of the Gucci son and heir Maurizio banging his fiancée Patrizia on a desk to the tune of the drinking song from La Traviata is a new low, quite embarrassing.
But this is no laughing matter. House of Gucci is not even so bad it’s good, like Gigli was. And it is 158 minutes long.
Jared Leto won the 2002 Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actor. They particularly appreciated his 17-Pound Latex Face, his Geeky Clothes and his Ridiculous Accent, though sadly he didn’t win for these.
