Her Husband Lies ** (1937, Gail Patrick, Ricardo Cortez, Akim Tamiroff, Tom Brown, Louis Calhern, June Martel) – Classic Movie Review 11,467

‘HE WAS ON THE LEVEL WITH EVERY TWO-TIMER ON BROADWAY… BUT HE COULDN’T PLAY STRAIGHT WITH A WOMAN!’

Director Edward Ludwig’s 1937 black and white American drama film Her Husband Lies is based on the story Street of Chance by Oliver H P Garrett, and stars Gail Patrick, Ricardo Cortez, Akim Tamiroff, Tom Brown, Louis Calhern and June Martel. It is written by Wallace Smith and Eve Greene.

Paramount Pictures studio remakes the 1930 movie Street of Chance, based on the life of New York gambler Arnold Rothstein, about two New York gambler brothers fighting to be top dog.

Spade Martin (Cortez) is married to Natalie (Patrick), but can’t tell her the truth, and, to save the lad’s skin, he has to teach his younger brother Chick (Brown) the ropes when the kid wants to enter the big-time gambling racket.

Her Husband Lies is minor and not as good as the original, but it is still very watchable thanks to the engrossing story, compelling cast and strong direction.

Also in the cast are June Martel, Dorothy Peterson, Jack La Rue, Ralf Harolde, Bradley Page, Ray Walker, Albert Conti, Frank Dawson, Paul Fix, Sam Flint, Judith Ford, Mary Gordon, Eddie Kane, Edward Keane, Fuzzy Knight, Harry Tyler, Lee Phelps, Robert Emmett O’Connor, Ivan Miller, and Noel Madison.

It was released on 13 March 1937 by Paramount Pictures.
