Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party *** (2016, Cole Doman, Joe Keery, Pat Healy, Elizabeth Laidlaw, Daniel Kyri) – Classic Movie Review 12,763

Preacher’s kid Henry Gamble is turning 17 today but bring your swimsuit as most of the movie is set in and around the family pool.

It turns out that Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party is going to be a coming out party, sort of, or more like a breaking out from all the religious nonsense the party-goers have been subjecting themselves to.

Writer/ director Stephen Cone’s 2016 American comedy drama film Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party takes place over that special day’s 24 hours. mostly at the birthday pool party of 17-year-old preacher’s kid Henry Gamble (Cole Doman), son of Bob (Pat Healy) and Kat (Elizabeth Laidlaw).

The party guests include adults and teenagers from his church, as well as Henry’s secular friends, including the closeted young gay Logan (Daniel Kyri), who has eyes for Henry, though Henry seems to be ignoring him and has eyes for his straight best friend Gabe (Joe Keery). Henry seems to be ignoring his own sexuality too (gay equals ‘weird’), along with most of the party-goers, though a young lesbian couple have him sussed.

Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party is a good hearted, warm spirited satirical comedy saying the right things and striking the right notes, and doing it interestingly, amusingly and gently provocatively. It’s quite smart and clever.

Almost everyone in the largish roster of characters, young and middle aged, believes in God, but almost all of them not in the restrictions this idea brings to a happy life. Well, there’s a dilemma! They long for sex, alcohol, and in some cases the gay life. Henry sure is having quite an eye-opener of a birthday. Henry seems like such a nice boy. He is surely going to have a happy life.

Cole Doman makes him an appealing hero, and draws the audience sweetly into his character’s growing up gay story, with the party serving as his wake-up call.
