Giro City *** (1982, Glenda Jackson, Jon Finch, Kenneth Colley) – Classic Movie Review 9992

Writer-director Karl Francis’s powerful 1982 left-wing thriller drama Giro City centres around TV documentary coverage of IRA activity in Dublin and British civic corruption, and offers unusually strong roles for Glenda Jackson and Jon Finch.

They respond with crackling performances as Sophie and O’Malley, investigative reporters frustrated by the restraints of their TV jobs and seeking to present honest documentaries about Ireland and local government corruption.

Giro City is persuasive and involving, and sharply made and intelligently written by director Francis.

Giro City was renamed And Nothing But the Truth in the US and Canada.

Also in the cast are Kenneth Colley, James Donnelly, Emrys James, Simon Jones, Karen Archer, Graham Berry, Simon Coady, Michael Lees, Bruce Alexander, David Beames, Huw Ceredig, Valerie Baker, Collette Baker, Gerwyn Baker, Alun Lewis, Roger Nott, Robert Austin, Peter Halliday and Robert Pugh.

Giro City [And Nothing But the Truth] is directed by Karl Francis, runs 102 minutes, is made by Affinity, Silverealm, Channel Four Films and Rediffusion, is released by Cinegate (1982) (UK) and Castle Hill Productions (1984) (US), is written by Karl Francis, is shot by Curtis Clark, is produced by Sophie Balhetchet and David Payne, is scored by Alun Francis, and is designed by Jamie Leonard.
