Family Viewing *** (1987, David Hemblen, Aidan Tierney, Gabrielle Rose, Arsinée Khanjian) – Classic Movie Review 10,661

Van: ‘I’ve been feeling kinda weird lately.’

Writer-director Atom Egoyan shows his unusual talent and cleverness in the 1987 Canadian drama Family Viewing, a surreal study of a disunited, TV obsessed family, in which a worried young man, Van (Aidan Tierney), whose father Stan (David Hemblen), is fond of taping video, examines the causes of his mother’s vanishing years ago. Van wants to get his grandmother Armen (Selma Keklikian) out of an old people’s home and it is there that he meets Aline (Arsinée Khanjian) who can help.

Family Viewing is obviously very much to taste but those ready for something extraordinary could be impressed by this experimental movie.

It stars David Hemblen, Aidan Tierney, Gabrielle Rose, Arsinée Khanjian, Selma Keklikian, Jeanne Sabourin, Rose Sarkisyan, and Vasag Baghboudarian.

It won Best Canadian Feature Film at the Toronto International Film Festival (1987).
