End of Days *** (1999, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gabriel Byrne, Robin Tunney, Rod Steiger, C C H Pounder, Kevin Pollak) – Classic Movie Review 6796

Director Peter Hyams’s exciting 1999 Sci-fi thriller stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, still in his prime as he takes on his biggest foe yet – Satan – played with great aplomb by Gabriel Byrne. Schwarzenegger’s character Jericho finds that the Devil (aka The Man) is in town with just one thing on his mind – to impregnate a woman in the last hour before the turn of the millennium.

End of Days is an underrated, enjoyable, robust action movie, made with plenty of flair, zest and pace by director Hyams. Despite being a Razzie Awards nominee for Worst Actor, Schwarzenegger is on fine action form and his fans will be in heaven.

Also in the cast are Robin Tunney as Christine, Rod Steiger as Father Kovak, C C H Pounder as Detective Marge Francis, Kevin Pollak as Chicago, Derrick O’Connor as Thomas Aquinas, Rainer Judd as Christine’s Mother, Miriam Margolyes as Mabel, Udo Keir as Head Priest, Victor Varnado, Michael O’Hagan, Mark Margolis, David Weisenberg, Luciano Miele and Jack Shearer.

End of Days is directed by Peter Hyams, runs 121 minutes, is produced by Beacon CommunicationsBeacon Pictures and Lucifilms, is released by Buena Vista, is written by Andrew W Marlowe, is shot by Peter Hyams, is produced by Armyan Bernstein and Bill Borden, is scored by John Debney and Cevin Key, and is designed by Richard Holland.

It was rated R for intense violence and gore, a strong sex scene and strong language.

It was very costly at $100,000,000, and did not do so very well in America with a $66,889,043 gross, but went on to succeed with a worldwide gross of $211,989,043.
