Easy Tiger *** (2022, Evgenia Brendes, Giada Castioni, Mickaël Pelissier) – Classic Movie Review 12,728

A psychologist experiences an unexpected moment at the end of a session with a male client and grapples to understand his overwhelming desire for him, in the 2022 art film Easy Tiger.

‘An intimate portrait of a vulnerable man during a true and insurmountable romance.’

A vulnerable male psychologist experiences an unexpected moment at the end of a session with a male client and grapples to understand his overwhelming desire for him. This apparently forces the therapist to look at who he does not want to be to find out who he really is, though this is only clear from the film’s synopsis. Does anything we see in the film actually happen? Probably not.

Karel Tuytschaever’s 2022 Belgium/ Netherlands experimental film Easy Tiger is slow and arty, but it remains intriguing, interesting and surprising throughout, as well as overall fairly impressive and oddly mesmerising as an audio-visual experience. It replaces the idea of narrative – there’s no story! – and instead celebrates the medium of film and relishes intimate human physicality. That’s the plan, it sticks to it, and does it rather stylishly, even provocatively and hauntingly. It is not hard work. You just have to let it wash over you, experience it.

It is a film about a character’s inner world, and there is very little dialogue and no acting, instead there are subtitles and sign language. The main players are relentlessly scrutinised and admired by the camera. It stars Evgenia Brendes, Giada Castioni and Mickaël Pelissier.

Release date: February 23, 2022.

Running time: 60 minutes.
