Dangerous Crossing *** (1953, Jeanne Crain, Michael Rennie, Carl Betz, Max Showalter) – Classic Movie Review 8993

Director Joseph M Newman’s 1953 black and white film noir mystery thriller Dangerous Crossing stars Jeanne Crain as young bride Ruth Bowman, whose new husband (Carl Betz) mysteriously disappears on their honeymoon on a transatlantic liner and then she feels that her life is in danger.

In this kind of mystery movie, you can bet there is a connection. No one seems to have seen him, his name is not on the passenger list and ship’s doctor, Dr Paul Manning (Michael Rennie), thinks that Ruth has gone round the bend.

A smart production, a tense mystery atmosphere and committed direction, along with adequate performances, make up for some routine thrills in Leo Townsend’s rather stale, second-hand lady-in-peril screenplay, based on the radio play story Cabin B-13 by John Dickson Carr.

Remake: Treacherous Crossing (1992) with Lindsay Wagner, Angie Dickinson and Grant Show.

Also in the cast are Max Showalter [Casey Adams], Mary Anderson, Willis Bouchey, Charles Tannen, William Tannen, Stanley Andrews, Yvonne Peattie, Marjorie Hoshelle, Karl Ludwig Lindt, Gayne Whitman, Harry Carter, Harry Seymour, Madge Blake and Adrienne Marden.

Dangerous Crossing is directed by Joseph M Newman, runs 75 minutes, is made and released by 20th Century Fox, is written by Leo Townsend, based on the radio play story Cabin B-13 by John Dickson Carr, is shot in black and white by Joseph La Shelle, is produced by Robert Bassler and is scored by Lionel Newman.
