Cowboys & Angels *** (2003, Michael Legge, Allen Leech, Amy Shiels, Frank Kelly) – Classic Movie Review 13,663

The 2003 Irish comedy drama film Cowboys & Angels stars Michael Legge as civil servant Shane and Allen Leech as fashion student Vincent, Shane’s gay roommate in Limerick.

Writer/ director David Gleeson’s 2003 Irish film Cowboys & Angels stars Michael Legge as civil servant Shane and Allen Leech as fashion student Vincent, Shane’s gay roommate in Limerick.

David Gleeson’s story concerns a hapless civil servant called Shane (Michael Legge) who gets more than he bargained for when he moves into a Limerick apartment with gay fashion student Vincent (Alan Leech), and eventually finds himself on the catwalk. It turns out that opposites attract.

The film supposedly sets out to explore the difficulties for young people in keeping their identities in a fast moving culture of drugs and clubs. But does it really? It mostly seems to set out to entertain, which is does well, with some thoughtful and slightly hard edges.

The entertaining 2003 Irish comedy drama film Cowboys & Angels gets by nicely on Michael Legge’s cheeky charm and Allen Leech’s campy sense of fun, and the fresh-feeling location filming in Limerick City, Ireland. Frank Kelly amuses as Jerry, an elderly civil servant who strikes up a friendship with Shane and tries to get him to do more with his life. The film is decently written and made by Irish film director and writer David Gleeson (himself born in Limerick).

Amy Shiels plays Gemma, David Murray plays Keith and Nigel Mercier plays the Inspector.

The movie was released on May 14, 2003 (Cannes).
