Caravans ** (1978, Anthony Quinn, Michael Sarrazin, Christopher Lee, Jennifer O’Neill, Joseph Cotten, Barry Sullivan, Jeremy Kemp) – Classic Movie Review 10,172

Director James Fargo’s 1978 Iran/ US co-production action adventure movie Caravans is set in 1948 in a fictional country called Zakharstan and stars Michael Sarrazin as a young American Embassy employee Mark Miller (Michael Sarazyn) tasked with finding and then bringing home influential US senator’s daughter Ellen Jasper (Jennifer O’Neill) who has signed up for a Bedouin caravan.

Caravans is a costly and good-looking but empty epic based on the James A Michener bestseller.

Anthony Quinn, Christopher Lee, Joseph Cotten, Barry Sullivan and Jeremy Kemp give their well-rehearsed turns.

The Iranian views, captured in Technicolor by ace cinematographer Douglas Slocombe, are as rare as they are spectacular, so it is worthwhile as an exotic travelogue.

Also in the cast are Behrooz Vosoughi, Susan Vaziri, Duncan Quinn, Parviz Jafari, Mohamad Ali Keshavarz, Parviz Gharib-Afshar, Fahimeh Amouzandeh, and Mohammad Taghi Kahnemoui.

It cost $14,000,000 and took only $3,930,500 in the US.
