Bloodbrothers **** (1978, Richard Gere, Paul Sorvino, Tony Lo Bianco, Kenneth McMillan, Lelia Goldoni) – Classic Movie Review 12,314

Director Robert Mulligan’s 1978 film Bloodbrothers [A Father’s Love] stars the superb cast of Richard Gere, Paul Sorvino, Tony Lo Bianco, Kenneth McMillan and Lelia Goldoni.

Walter Newman’s script for this tale of the fall of an Italian-American family was deservedly nominated for an Oscar, in a fine adaptation of the novel by Richard Price. It is an early appearance for Gere (and an early sign that he could really act) as a man trying both to please his father by becoming a construction worker like him and to please himself by breaking free of the family.

The remarkable ensemble cast give really strong performances in Mulligan’s underrated film, and there is also a good Elmer Bernstein score.

As the film is arguably about 15 minutes overlong at 118 minutes, the distributor’s cut for the video version (93 minutes) should perhaps be considered perfect for length. Mulligan himself cut it to 98 minutes for American TV.

Also in the cast are Yvonne Wilder, Marilu Henner, Danny Aiello, Floyd Levine, Michael Hershewe, Pamela Myers, Christine DeBell, and Robert Englund.
