Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time * (1991, Marc Singer, Kari Wuhrer, Sarah Douglas, Wings Hauser, James Avery) – Classic Movie Review 8754

The royal child stolen at birth and named Dar, who who can talk to the beasts and has a strange fondness for ferrets, is back in the hunky shape of Marc Singer for a second slice of the Beastmaster fantasy action adventure, director Sylvio Tabet’s 1991 sword and sorcery sequel Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time.

Dar (Marc Singer) time-travels to Earth via a portal to modern-day Los Angeles to stop his evil half-brother Arklon (Wings Hauser) stealing a dangerous neutron bomb and turning their native land into a desert.

It is good to have Singer back as Dar, but this time it is a very low budget affair (only $6,000,000), and there is a merely serviceably entertaining rather than inspired plot, and the result is just tolerable instead of exciting.

Also in the cast are Sarah Douglas as Lyranna, Wings Hauser, James Avery as Lieutenant Coberly, Kari Wuhrer as Jackie Trent, Robert Fieldsteel, Arthur Malet and Robert Z’Dar.

Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time is directed by Sylvio Tabet, runs 107 minutes, is made by Films 21, is released by New Line Cinema (1991) (US), is written by Sylvio Tabet, Jim Wynoski, Wings Hauser and Doug Miles, based on the novel by Andre Norton and the characters by Paul Pepperman, is shot by Ronn Schmidt, is produced by Sylvio Tabet and is scored by Robert Folk.

Beastmaster 3: The Eye of Braxus followed in 1996.

Jim Wynorski was set to direct and wrote a screenplay before Sylvio Tabet decided to take over. Tabet produced the original The Beastmaster, as well as Evilspeak and Fade to Black. This is his only film as director. He was also executive producer for the 66 episodes TV Series BeastMaster (1999-2002), with Daniel Goddard as Dar.
