BASEketball *** (1998, Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Dian Bachar) – Classic Movie Review 9689

The 1998 movie BASEketball is an agreeably amusingly silly sports comedy, made by the director of The Naked Gun (David Zucker). TV’s South Park stars Trey Parker and Matt Stone are funny as Milwaukee loser guys, Coop and Remer, who invent a new game mixing basketball and baseball, which soon catches on.

They form an equal-pay BASEketball league, and start their own team, the Milwaukee Beers, but come up against greedy businessman Baxter Cain (Robert Vaughn), the wicked owner of the Dallas Felons who wants to change the rules.

Despite all the vulgarity, swearing, bad-taste gags and jokes that miss the target, BASEketball is a funny movie, and there are lots of big laughs to be found in this daft, good-natured satire.

Also in the cast are Dian Bachar, Yasmine Bleeth, Jenny McCarthy, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Vaughn, Trevor Einhorn, Bob Costas (himself), Al Michaels (himself), Robert Stack (as Unsolved Mysteries Host), Reggie Jackson (himself), Dan Patrick (himself), Kenny Mayne (himself), Tim McCarver (himself), Richard Johnson, Francis X McCarthy, and Jill Gascoine (Hospital Nurse).

It is written by David Zucker, Robert LoCash, Lewis Friedman and Jeff Wright.

BASEketball is rated R for strong language and crude sex-related humour.

RIP Jill Gascoine.
