Chow Yun-Fat kicks the thin and familiar plot into touch in the slick and stylish 1998 American martial arts action film thriller The Replacement Killers.

Making the most of his American film debut, Chow Yun-Fat kicks the thin and familiar plot into touch in the slick and stylish 1998 American martial arts action film thriller The Replacement Killers. It is based on a screenplay written by Ken Sanzel, with big thrills excitingly orchestrated by Antoine Fuqua in his feature film directorial debut.
Chow Yun-Fat plays professional assassin John Lee, who defies orders from a crime boss and becomes a target himself, teaming with a skilled forger to escape hired ‘replacement’ killers.
Chow Yun-Fat’s role is a no-acting-required one, but he is great in the action. Mira Sorvino is a strong and attractive supporting presence. They form one of screen’s odd couples, and they work surprisingly well together. The starry character actor support cast of Michael Rooker, Kenneth Tsang, Jürgen Prochnow, Til Schweiger, Danny Trejo as Collins, Clifton Collins Jr and Carlos Gomez is a huge advantage. They are all very entertaining and the film is thoroughly enjoyable, with some spectacular action and a lot of questionable gunplay.
It premiered in the US on February 6, 1998, and was a surprise box office disappointment, grossing $19.2 million at the US box office and an eventual total of $39.5 million worldwide against a $30 million budget.
Mira Sorvino recalled: ‘I loved working with Antoine, and it was fun to do an action movie. It was kind of like being a kid and playing cowboys and Indians, or cops and robbers. And I enjoyed the role of Meg. I thought she was fun to do.’
Antoine Fuqua recalled: ‘The Replacement Killers was a good and bad experience. It was great because Chow Yun-Fat is the coolest guy in the world. He was just beautiful. Mira Sorvino was cool. It was fun working with Mira. But the difficult thing was learning the studio system. I didn’t realize Chow Yun-fat didn’t speak English. So, he was thinking more about how to say the words while trying to get a performance. Then you have so many bullets flying around. In retrospect, it’s OK.’
Ken Sanzel recalled: ‘The script bears very little resemblance to anything I would have written. Only the bare bones of the plot really survived. I think that Chow Yun-Fat was incredible, but for me the movie was a series of otherwise bad decisions.’
Cast: Chow Yun-fat as John Lee, Mira Sorvino as Meg Coburn, Michael Rooker as Detective Stan ‘Zeedo; Zedkov, Kenneth Tsang as Terence Wei, Jürgen Prochnow as Michael Kogan, Til Schweiger as Ryker, Danny Trejo as Collins, Clifton Collins Jr as Loco, Carlos Gomez as Detective Hunt.
