When it sticks to the nuts and bolts of ad agency life, writer/ director Les Blair’s 1986 BBC Screen Two improvised comedy film Honest, Decent and True is crisp and delicious.
Flaws enter with the employees’ home lives, though the performances are entertaining and well observed. Thomas Wheatley is particularly fine as the brewery chief uncertainly stepping down from his ivory tower. Derrick O’Connor stars as Mike Selby, who runs the KFS advertising agency tasked with promoting the launch of a premium artisan lager called Chaser.
Honest, Decent and True is excellent stuff, flaws and all, with a great cast: Derrick O’Connor, Yvonne French, Lyndsay Russell, Arabella Weir, Tony Portacio, Adrian Edmondson, Richard E Grant, Gary Oldman, Thomas Wheatley, Alison Neil, Ian Sharp, Jill Carey, and Rupert Baker.
Honest, Decent and True [Honest, Decent & True] is directed by Les Blair, runs 95 minutes, is made by Screen Two, is released by BBC TV, is written by Les Blair, is shot by John McGlashan, is produced by Graham Benson, is scored by Simon Brint, and is designed by Jim Clay.
Screen Two series 2, episode 5 Honest, Decent & True first aired on BBC2 on February 9, 1986.
