Republic Pictures’ 1955 Trucolor American Western Santa Fe Passage stars John Payne, Faith Domergue, and Rod Cameron.

Director William Witney’s 1955 Republic Pictures American Western Santa Fe Passage, is shot in Trucolor, is written by Lillie Hayward, based on a story by Heck Allen (writing as Clay Fisher), and stars John Payne, Faith Domergue, and Rod Cameron.
The trouble-bedevilled passage of a wagon train of guns owned by lovely ‘half-breed’ Aurelie St Clair (Faith Domergue) travelling from the Missouri River to New Mexico, led by a veteran Indian-hating scout called Kirby Randolph (John Payne) and his partner Sam Beekman (Slim Pickens), hired by Jess Griswold (Rod Cameron), is the centre-piece of a strictly formula, old-style oater. There is nothing particularly wrong with the formula, though, or the old-style Fifties Western either.
Randolph hates Indians because he was betrayed by Kiowa chief Satank (George Keymas), massacring many men and thereby destroying Kirby’s reputation. Aurelie, who has a half-interest in the shipment of ammunition being delivered to Mexican soldiers, refuses when Randolph demands old Indian woman Ptewaquin (Irene Tedrow) is ordered off the wagon train. Aurelie’s antagonism to Randolph changes to attraction after he saves several lives, but Griswold also loves Aurelie.
A colourful but cheap and clichéd actioner from Republic Pictures is lifted by plenty of tense action, three appealing star performances and a good support cast of Western worthies in this tale decently enough adapted from the 1952 Esquire Magazine story Santa Fe Passage by Heck Allen (writing as Clay Fisher). The Trucolor cinematography by Bud Thackery is incredibly murky and faded, but part of the film’s charm and allure.
Shooting took place in Snow Canyon State Park in Utah, in the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, which features a canyon carved from the red and white Navajo sandstone of the Red Mountains and the extinct Santa Clara Volcano. Shooting also took place in Arizona locations, including Kayenta, Colorado City, Fredonia, and Teec Nos Pos.
Cast: John Payne as Kirby Randolph, Faith Domergue as Aurelie St Clair, Rod Cameron as Jess Griswold, Slim Pickens as Sam Beekman, Leo Gordon as Tuss McLawery, Irene Tedrow as Ptewaquin, George Keymas as Chief Satank, Anthony Caruso as Chavez.
