Writer/ director Tony Vitale’s amusing 1997 comedy film Kiss Me Guido stars Nick Scotti, Anthony Barrile, Anthony DeSando, and Craig Chester.
Gay actor-choreographer Warren (Anthony Barrile) decides to rent out his spare room, and falls for his simple-minded, hunky straight lodger, Bronx pizza-maker Frankie (Nick Scotti), who has mixed up a newspaper flat-share classified ad saying ‘GMW’ (gay white male) for ‘guy with money’.
Kiss Me Guido is a funny, sassy, fast-moving, appealing odd-couple comedy, with amusing, witty dialogue, a good nature and a warm heart.
Tony Vitale’s bouncy screenplay is rewarded with sprightly, exuberant playing from a capable cast. Craig Chester plays Barrile’s buddy Terry and Anthony DeSando plays Scotti’s brother Pino.
There’s a nice soundtrack too, inevitably including Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Am What I Am’.
Cast: Nick Scotti, Anthony Barrile, Anthony DeSando, Craig Chester, Domenick Lombardozzi, Molly Price, Christopher Lawford, Antonia Rey, Jennifer Esposito, and Tony Vitale.
It was released by Paramount Pictures on July 18, 1997.
CBS brought Kiss Me, Guido to TV in 2001 as the sitcom Some of My Best Friends, with Jason Bateman as Warren, Danny Nucci as Frankie, Michael DeLuise as Pino and Alec Mapa. It was cancelled after only five of the seven produced episodes had aired. The film was a success, but alas the TV show really wasn’t.
