Producer-director Jack Smight’s 1970 thriller stars Stacy Keach, who brings a little distinction to this weird, macabre entertainment about ex-carny Jonas Candide (Keach), an operator of a portable electric chair in 1918.
Marianna Hill co-stars as Gundred Herzallerliebst, a murderess he has to dispatch but ends up falling for, and Bud Cort plays his unhinged young assistant, Jimmy.
The Traveling Executioner [The Travelling Executioner] has its downsides, with various uncertainties, but the acting, screenplay (Garrie Bateson) and handling do get the blackly comic tone about right.
Also in the cast are Graham Jarvis, James J Sloyan, M Emmet Walsh, John Bottoms, Ford Rainey, James Greene, Sammy Reese, Stefan Gierasch, Logan Ramsey, Charles Tyner, William Mims, Val Avery, Walter Barnes, Charlie Briggs, Paul Gauntt, Scottie MacGregor, Lorna Thayer and Pat Patterson.
The Traveling Executioner [The Travelling Executioner] is directed by Jack Smight, runs 94 minutes, is released by MGM, is written by Garrie Bateson, is shot in Metrocolor by Philip H Lathrop, is produced by Jack Smight, is scored by Jerry Goldsmith, and is designed by George W Davis and Edward C Carfagno.
