The Incredibles **** (2004, Craig T Nelson, Samuel L Jackson, Holly Hunter, Jason Lee, Brad Bird) – Classic Movie Review 2648

Retired superheroes Mr Incredible and Elastigirl are called back to action on a secret assignment. Little do they know that Syndrome, once rejected as Incrediboy, is out to destroy all superheroes…

This clever Pixar/Disney 2004 gem from today’s golden age of the animated feature film, when it’s trendy for grown-ups to thrill to kids’ movies, is supercharged with quirky characters, stylish visuals, oddball charm, fantastic action and witty banter. It won the 2005 Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year.

Vocally, Craig T Nelson’s Incredible and Jason Lee’s Syndrome have a tough time holding their own against Holly Hunter’s husky Elastigirl, director Brad Bird’s mouthy frock designer Edna E Mode and Samuel L Jackson’s cool Frozone.

Even if most of the best stuff is in the second half and the movie seems stretched at two hours (OK it’s 115 minutes), it is still pretty incredible. And it was incredibly successful at the box office.

The Incredibles comes from Pixar, the Oscar-winning creators of Toy Story, Monsters Inc and Finding Nemo, and it is written and directed by the double Oscar-winning Brad Bird, maker of The Iron Giant (1999), Ratatouille (2007) and Tomorrowland (2015).
